Meeting a Campus' Growing Recreation Needs + Student Body

In 1996, private St. Mary's College High School became co-educational. It was at that time that we completed this $3.5 million, 14,000 square foot addition and gymnasium. The new structure greatly augmented the campus' facilities and its overall appeal to a broader range of prospective students.

Key Project Considerations
Kappe+Du Architects
+ The campus is in a residential neighborhood, so extensive meetings were necessary to achieve consensus for the final plan
San Francisco Bay Area Architecture
+ Energy efficiency and environmental comfort were important issues
San Francisco Bay Area Architecture
+ The campus had diverse recreation needs
Kappe+Du Architects
+ We had to carefully deal with a steeply sloping site

Project Successes Achieved Through Design
Kappe+Du Architects
+ To respond to the steep site, the structure steps up the hillside and the gymnasium is located on the second level
Kappe+Du Architects
+ The gymnasium also functions as a multipurpose room with a professional stage
Kappe+Du Architects
+ The large vaulted space on the second floor is located above new locker facilities, team rooms, and an exercise room
Kappe+Du Architects
+ Above and to the right of the gymnasium, a skylight and Kalwall translucent window walls feature motorized shading devices for soft lighting, environmental control, and energy reduction
Kappe+Du Architects
+ We designed the complex through extensive collaboration with the community members of the surrounding residential neighborhood
