A Vital Community Gathering-Place

Serving an ethnically and age diverse neighborhood, this $4.1 million community recreation center, administrative offices, and park create a dynamic gathering place for San Francisco's Richmond District. The 16,500 square foot center is set back from the street, and has pedestrian paths leading from 18th and 19th Avenues to the entrance plaza, where the center's sculptural form fully reveals itself.

Key Project Considerations
Kappe+Du Architects
+ The community, city agencies, and local groups all wanted to offer valuable input into the creation of the center
Kappe+Du Architects
+ Energy use and environmental issues were important considerations
Kappe+Du Architects
+ Ensure that this massive structure would blend into the character of the surrounding residential neighborhood

Project Successes Achieved Through Design
Kappe+Du Architects
+ Strategically positioned behind two grassy mounds and set back on the property, the center initially appears quite inconspicuous
Kappe+Du Architects
+ The building's design addresses energy efficiency and environmental concerns through its massing, and the extensive use of translucent clerestory windows along its south facade fill the gymnasium with soft, natural light and reduce solar heat gain
Kappe+Du Architects
+ The center has become a vibrant part of the growing community and serves an important area in San Francisco, thanks to the collaborative design process, aided by translators working with the community, and public survey work
Kappe+Du Architects
+ Local artists partnered with the design team on the creation of outside pathways, lined with several pieces of commissioned artwork around the center's grounds
Kappe+Du Architects
+ Unifying the predominantly Chinese and Russian district, the finished project creates a balance that serves the area's young people, adults, and seniors
Kappe+Du Architects
+ The entry plaza itself provides a general meeting-place, and an outdoor play area for neighborhood children
Kappe+Du Architects
+ Teenagers regularly play basketball and badminton in the gymnasium, where local plays also occur on a built-in stage in this multipurpose space
Kappe+Du Architects
+ Adults use an adjacent community room with kitchens for cooking classes, and seniors host bingo games
